 Cardiff nurse sentenced for fraud

A nurse was sentenced to 52 weeks imprisonment suspended for 2 years for defrauding the NHS over a four year period of approximately £80,000. Today’s conviction at Cardiff Crown Court follows an investigation by the Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust’s Local Counter Fraud Specialist in conjunction with the UK Border Agency (UKBA).

Kate Adunni Dosumu, 48, from Whitchurch Road, Cardiff got a job as a Nursing Auxiliary based at University Hospital of Wales, Heath Park, Cardiff by using a false passport. At the time Dosumu was also living illegally in the UK. It is believed that Dosumu needed the money to fund her daughter’s university education.

Suspicions were raised when a National Fraud Initiative Data Matching Exercise revealed that Dosumu had used the same National Insurance Number as another NHS employee based in the North West of England. Further checks identified that Dosumu, whose visa to remain in the UK expired in 2004, used the false passport as part of her application for employment at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff during 2005.

Dosumu pleaded guilty to two charges at Cardiff Magistrates Court on 7th August 2009: Obtaining a Pecuniary Advantage by Criminal Deception contrary to Section 16 of the Theft Act 1968 and Using a False Instrument contrary to Section 3 of the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981.

Craig Greenstock, Local Counter Fraud Specialist for Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust said:

“Kate Dosumu’s actions were completely unacceptable – by using public money for her own personal gain, she deprived Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust of valuable resources that could have been used to treat patients.

Hopefully her prosecution will send a message to potential fraudsters that we will not tolerate this theft and also show that we are not an easy target”.
