Formal practice inspections are carried out by DRS clinicians, usually at the request of a health body and may be as a result of concerns raised by patients or practice staff. In Wales, there is a three yearly, rolling programme of routine practice inspections. All DRS clinicians hold the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners (UK) Certificate of Dental Practice Appraisal.
A practice inspection involves completion of a checklist covering a wide range of areas including: premises, required documentation, policies, radiological equipment, infection control, health and safety and clinical environment.
