What you Could Get If You Started Training Before the 1st of September 2007

Diploma level Nurses, Midwives and Operating Department Practitioners

If you are an eligible student enrolled on a diploma level course that leads to professional registration as:

  • Nurse
  • Midwife; or
  • Operating Department Practitioner

You could get a non-income assessed bursary.

The amount you could receive dependents on if you are studying in London and if not, whether you will be living with your parents during term time.

The basic rates for 2009/10 are shown in the following table:

Depending on your circumstances you could also get

  • An initial allowance at the start of training of £55
  • Help with childcare costs
  • An older students allowance
  • A Single parent addition
  • Dependents allowances

  • Disabled students’ allowances

Other NHS funded students

If you are an eligible student enrolled on a:

  • Undergraduate medical or dental course in year 5 or beyond
  • Post graduate medical or dental course in years 2, 3 or 4
  • Nursing degree course
  • Midwifery degree course
  • Audiology course
  • Chiropody or Podiatry course
  • Dietetics course
  • Dental hygiene or dental therapy course
  • Occupational therapy course
  • Orthoptics course
  • Physiotherapy course
  • Prosthetic and orthotics course
  • Radiography course; or
  • Speech and language therapy course

You could get an income assessed bursary.

This means that, where appropriate your income, and that of your parents, your spouse, partner or civil partner may be taken into account, and the amount of bursary may be reduced in proportion to their income, net of allowable deductions.

If your parents, civil partner, partner or spouse do not complete the necessary forms, you cannot receive the NHS Bursary nor can the NHS undertake to make good any defaults in an assessed contribution.

If you are independent of your parents no parental contribution will be assessed, but a spouse or civil partner's contribution may still be applicable.  What is an independent student?
