Accessibility statement for Overseas Healthcare Services Case Management System

This accessibility statement applies to Overseas Healthcare Services Case Management System (OHS Caseman).

This website is run by the NHS Business Services Authority. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent version of NVDA)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible, as:

  • the NHS BSA logo uses the incorrect alternative text
  • the user is not informed they will be timed out after a certain length of inactivity
  • some page headings fail to describe the purpose of the page
  • the text colour of some tabs change when focus is placed on them making them difficult to read
  • URLs could be difficult to interpret for screen readers
  • some pages use duplicated page titles making it difficult for users of screen readers to establish where they are
  • The error text is not marked as an alert
  • some of our elements in the Metrics tab are difficult to navigate using just a keyboard

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

The NHS Business Services Authority is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Some images do not have the correct text alternative, so people using a screen reader may receive incorrect information. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.5 (Images of Text).

No warning is given that the user will be timed out after a certain length of time. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.2.6 (Timeouts).

Some page headings don’t correctly describe the purpose of the page. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.6 (Headings and Labels).

When some elements gain focus the text becomes difficult to read. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.1 (Use of Colour).

URLs do not use hyphens to separate words and use acronyms. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4 (Navigable).

Some page titles are not descriptive, some titles are duplicated, so people using a screen reader may not know the purpose of the page or where they are in the service. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.2 (Page Titled).

Not all error text is read as an ‘Alert’. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 3.3.1 (Error Identification).

Elements on the Metrics tab cannot be interacted with using keyboard only. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.1 (Keyboard Accessible).

We aim to fix these areas.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

Metrics tab

Due to an issue with Dragon and some older versions of this assistive technology, users will have difficulties interacting with certain fields. We advise Dragon users to use the mouse grid feature to interact with these features.

We aim to review this.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We’re committed to making sure this website is compliant to WCAG 2.1 ‘AA’ standard.

Every new released website will be designed, built, and tested to meet ‘AA’ standards by default.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 25 October 2019. It was last reviewed on 12 May 2022.

This website was last tested on 24 March 2022. The test was carried out by the NHSBSA test and development teams.

We tested all of the website screens to meet ‘AA’ WCAG 2.1 standards, using manual and automated tests.

We run each webpage through automated Wave, Lighthouse and Axe accessibility tools then manually test with screen readers (NVDA or VoiceOver) and standards checklists.

We run representative user journey tests through speech recognition software (Dragon or Voice Control).

These checklists contain standards that have been compiled using WCAG, the NHS service manual and the Government Digital Service (GDS) guidance.
