What is an NHS Number?

Your NHS Number is a 10-digit number that is unique to you. It helps healthcare staff and service providers identify you correctly and match your details to your health records.

Your NHS Number is not the same as your National Insurance Number, which is made up of letters and numbers.

Why do you want my NHS Number?

We currently do not hold your NHS Number. Your NHS Number is the most accurate way for us to confirm your identity and match your details during our automated exemption checking.

From time to time, we carry out automated checks to confirm your eligibility for free NHS prescriptions. If we find a mismatch in your information, you’re at risk of getting a penalty charge.

Where can I find my NHS Number?

You can find your NHS Number on:

  • any letter sent to you by the NHS
  • your prescriptions
  • the NHS app

I cannot find my NHS Number

Telling us your NHS Number reduces your risk of receiving a Penalty Charge Notice.
If you cannot find your NHS Number, you should still use the service to tell us your most up-to-date details.
