Holding patient identifiable dental records

We are changing how long we hold patient identifiable dental records for.

A review into our purposes for holding identifiable dental records was conducted in early 2021, and we accepted a recommendation to shorten the length of time that we store patient identifiable dental records from 10 years to 8 years. This change will take effect from Friday 29 April 2022.

This change does not affect:

  • contract management information
  • financial transaction information
  • dental practice record forms

Information covering contract management and financial transactions will continue to be held for six years plus the financial year it was collected in, and dental practice record forms will be kept for a period of two years.

Should you wish to make a data request from 2013 or 2012, or if you would like more information on the change to our record retention, please visit our Dental data page.
