The pharmacy earlier payment scheme (PEPS)

As part of a broader initiative by the UK Government to help small and medium sized enterprises, community pharmacies were offered earlier access to their monthly advance payment for the provision of NHS pharmaceutical services.

The 'pharmacy earlier payment scheme' (PEPS) was introduced for prescriptions dispensed in April 2013 and onwards. It's a privately financed and voluntary arrangement, initially, between Citibank, facilitated by us.

The Crown Commercial Service has now procured a new provider and the contract has been awarded to Taulia, managed by us. The new contract commences on 1 July 2018.

More information about Taulia and the scheme can be found on the Taulia website

The interim scheme will be an automatic financing option only, and we'll work with Taulia to provide a manual financing option in the near future.

Taulia will accept new contractors who want to opt into the scheme from 11 May 2018 onwards, with first early payments starting on 9 July 2018.

Information for signed up contractors

Signed up contractors should make sure that their batches are received by us in good time to take advantage of the benefits offered by the scheme.

We'll contact contractors currently opted into the scheme with Citibank, to request consent, should they so wish, to transition over to the Taulia scheme.

First earlier payment date (8th of the month)

To make the first early payment date, you'll need to secure delivery of the previous month's prescriptions and correctly completed FP34C declaration to us by the 3rd day of the month following that in which the supply was made.

Second earlier payment date (12th of the month)

Earlier payment can be made available by the 12th day of the month if prescriptions and completed FP34C are dispatched, in a secure manner, from the pharmacy not later than the 5th day of the month following that in which the supply was made (as now) and delivered by the 8th of the month.

If prescriptions cannot be delivered to us until after the 8th of the month, earlier payment cannot be assured and payment is likely to be on the normal payment date of the 1st of the month.

Access to the earlier payment through Taulia is based on the date prescriptions are received by us, so it's important that they are dispatched in good time and prepared correctly.

If the first earlier payment date (8th of the month) or the second earlier payment date (12th of the month) fall on a weekend or bank holiday, then payment will be made on the next available working day.

Refer to 'frequently asked questions' number 15, detailed on the Taulia website, for a detailed breakdown of timescales from submission of prescriptions to availability of funds.
