28-day reattendance (28DR) activity reviews

We've agreed with NHS England and NHS Improvement to pause this activity until further notice due to COVID-19

This review looks at how many patients re-attend their dental practice within 28 days of receiving treatment.

There may be reasons for some short periods between courses of treatment, but the review helps us to understand why some providers have higher rates.

Providers with higher rates are asked to supply a sample of patient records for review. This allows us to:

  • understand the reasons for high rates of 28DR claiming
  • raise awareness of the potential risks around 28DR claiming
  • allow providers to review and amend their claiming procedures

Where inappropriate claims are identified, we’ll seek financial recovery and refund any patient charge.

We will continue to review the rate of 28-day reattendance across England and Wales.
