NHS Workforce Services

Our NHS Workforce Services directorate has been created to bring together a number of different workforce functions that support the NHS career pathway. They’re all aimed at helping both employers and NHS workers to manage their careers – from searching for a job in the health service to their retirement and beyond.


NHS England’s Next Steps on the Five Year Forward View states that “The NHS in 2020 is going to be looking after more patients, better funded and larger than the NHS of today. We are therefore going to need to improve productivity and grow our front line workforce.”


NHS Workforce Services is therefore committed to providing a valued ‘hire to retire’ service to the NHS to help recruit, retain, develop and manage their workforce, as well as providing a world-leading pension service to take care of their future.


The directorate is made up of these services:

NHS Jobs

The NHS Jobs website is the official recruiting platform for the NHS in England and Wales. With over 25,000 new posts advertised each month and 750,000 new applicants signing up to the site every year, NHS Jobs is the one-stop-shop for recruitment for NHS bodies.

Electronic Staff Record (ESR)

ESR is the essential workforce management solution for the NHS in England and Wales, supporting the delivery of national workforce policy and strategy. Visit the ESR website for more information.

HR Shared Services

The NHSBSA provides HR services not just for our own people, but also for a number of other large NHS bodies. These include: NHS England, NHS Improvement and NICE.

Our clients choose from a suite of services we can provide, including:

  • employee administration
  • recruitment
  • learning management
  • HR advisory
  • payroll services

The shared service works in partnership with our clients to help maximise efficiency, enhance the service offer and drive down NHS costs.

NHS Pensions

We administer the NHS Pension Scheme in England and Wales on behalf of over 3 million members. We manage contributions of over £10 billion per year and pay out a similar amount to pensioners. Visit the NHS Pensions website for more information.

Total Reward Statements (TRS)

Every year, we provide statements for all 1.3 million NHS employees that give an overview of their pay, local employment benefits and (if applicable) a summary of their membership in the NHS Pension Scheme.Find out More about Total Reward Statements.
