Maternity exemption certificates

Due to planned system maintenance, the NHS Help with Health Costs maternity exemption certificate system will be unavailable from 4:30pm on Friday 16 December until 7:00am on Monday 19 December.

Our contact centre will be unable to answer any personal queries relating to your exemption certificate during this period. For general queries our online knowledge base Ask Us is available 24 hours a day.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Maternity exemption

Pregnant women and those who have had a baby in the last 12 months get free:

  • NHS prescriptions - but only if you have a valid maternity exemption certificate
  • NHS dental treatment if, when you are accepted for a course of treatment, you are pregnant or have had a baby in the previous 12 months.

We are responsible for issuing maternity exemption certificates, on behalf of the Department of Health, to women in England who are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months.
