This explains how your pay is used to calculate your NHS Pension benefits.
If you're an officer member
2015 Scheme
Under the 2015 Scheme, we calculate your pension benefits based on your pensionable pay for each year. This is any pay you’ve received that has contributed towards your NHS Pension.
Your pensionable pay may differ from the actual pay you received. This is because some payments and allowances are not pensionable. You can read more about what counts towards pensionable pay (opens in new tab).
2008 section
Under the 2008 Section, we calculate your pension benefits using your reckonable pay for each year. This is the average of your best 3 consecutive years of pensionable pay over your last 10 years of employment, after we've revalued them in line with the Consumer Price Index.
1995 section
Under the 1995 Section, we calculate your pension benefits on a final salary basis each year. We look at your pensionable pay for your last 3 years of employment and use the highest amount.
If you're a practitioner
This is the amount of uprated practitioner earnings used to calculate your practitioner benefits. It includes any salary from hospital and community work.
It also includes any uprating that applies if you moved to the 2015 Scheme.
