Penalty charges

We are responsible for verifying claims for:

Claims are checked randomly and retrospectively. Where a patient has incorrectly claimed free prescriptions or free or reduced cost dental treatment, we recover the original charges plus a penalty charge.

How penalty charges are calculated

In line with the National Health Service (Penalty Charge) Regulations 1999, the penalty charge is five times the amount of the relevant dental treatment or prescription charge, up to a maximum of £100.

Where the charges due are not paid within the specified timescale, a surcharge may be applied. The surcharge is half the amount of the penalty charge.
