Travel Costs for Disabled Students on Placement
Current and previous recipients of Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) with a Study Needs Assessment that recommends taxi travel to and from placement, can claim back the Public Transport Equivalent Cost (PTEC) that is deducted from their DSA.
Example
If your DSA covers taxi travel but £3.00 per journey is deducted as a public transport cost, you can claim that £3.00 back through the NHS Bursary Travel and Dual Accommodation Expenses (TDAE).
Eligibility
Those in receipt of the NHS Bursary Disabled Students Allowance with a Study Needs Assessment that recommends taxi travel to placements.
How to claim
You can claim for this cost for any current or past placements.
To claim for PTEC through TDAE:
- download a TDAE claim form. A new form for PTEC claims will be available soon.
- complete the relevant sections, as instructed on the form
- send your completed form to your university. Don't forget to include your receipts and evidence of your costs
If you are claiming for a past placement, you must have been in receipt of an NHS Bursary and DSA at the time of the placement.
You can claim for this cost for any current or past placements, as this applies retrospectively.
For current or past claims, you must include the following evidence with your claim form:
- evidence of your taxi costs and
- your NHS Bursary DSA award letter, which shows your recommended taxi journeys and the corresponding public transport deduction.
All claims for past placements must be submitted by the end of the 2025-26 academic year – i.e. by 31 August 2026.
