Accessibility statement for the Healthcare Inequalities: Access to NHS prescribing and exemption schemes in England website

This accessibility statement applies to the Healthcare Inequalities: Access to NHS prescribing and exemption schemes in England website, an interactive report produced by the NHSBSA Data Analytics Learning Laboratory (DALL).

This website is run by the NHS Business Services Authority. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent version of NVDA)

We have also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible, as:

  • some of the visual elements, such as charts, may not be able to be viewed at very high zoom levels
  • users accessing the website using assisted technology, such as screen readers, may have difficultly interacting with chart elements
  • some values on charts are only accessible when hovering over data points
  • some links to external sites may not clearly identify the link destination
  • some users may experience issues with sufficient colour contrast when viewing chart elements

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

The NHS Business Services Authority is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

At extremely high zoom levels, such as 400%, charts within the report will overflow the screen making the data difficult to interpret. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.10 (Reflow).

The website includes numerous charts that users of assisted technology, such as screen readers, may have difficulty interacting with. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Content).

All charts included use hover-over or pop-up elements to present additional information for each data point. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.13 (Content on Hover or Focus).

Throughout the text, some links are included to external sites where this may provide supporting information, and in places these links may not be clear as to what the destination will be. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 (Link Purpose).

The website has insufficient colour contrast relating to chart elements throughout the website. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 (Contrast Minimum).

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We’re committed to making sure this website is compliant to WCAG 2.1 ‘AA’ standard.

Every new released website will be designed, built and tested to meet ‘AA’ standards by default.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 26 May 2022. It was last reviewed on 14 June 2022.

This website was last tested on 26 May 2022. The test was carried out by NHSBSA test and front-end development teams.

We tested all the website screens to meet ‘AA’ WCAG 2.1 standards, using manual and automated tests.

We run each webpage through automated Wave, Lighthouse and Axe accessibility tools then manually test with screen readers (NVDA or Voice Over) and standards checklists.

These checklists contain standards that have been compiled using WCAG, NHS service manual and Government Digital Service (GDS) guidance.
