Accessibility statement for NHS Electronic Staff Record (ESR) Portal

This accessibility statement applies to the NHS ESR portal website.

This website is run by the NHS Business Services Authority. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:  

  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent version of ChromeVox

It may not be possible to navigate the website using just a keyboard. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.1.1 (Keyboard).

Search boxes do not have label or instruction, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 3.3.2 (Label or Instruction).

Buttons and links on some pages have suspicious text, do not have unique text or are empty, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information.

There are are also tab index issues and broken ARIA references and menus. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 (Link Purpose (In Context)) and 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value). 

Some attributes and active elements do not have unique names of identifiers, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.1 (Parsing).

Colour has been used to show compliance status, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.1 (Use of colour).

Some images do not have alternative text. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non Text Content).

Time outs are not shown on the screen. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.2.6 (Timeouts).

Some headings are not are not ordered correctly. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.10 (Section Heading).

It may not be possible to navigate the website using speech recognition software. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value) & 4.1.3 (Status Messages).

We plan to fix all the accessibility issues. When we publish new content we'll make sure they meet accessibility standards.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We’re committed to making sure this website is compliant to WCAG 2.1 ‘AA’ standard.

Every new released website will be designed, built and tested to meet 'AA' standards by default.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 20 September 2020. It was last reviewed on 30 September 2021.

This website was last tested on 6 August 2020. The test was carried out by a third party supplier. 

We tested all of the website screens to meet ‘AA’ WCAG 2.1 standards, using manual and automated tests.

We run each webpage through automated Wave, Lighthouse and Axe accessibility tools then manually test with screen readers (ChromeVox) and standards checklists.

These checklists contain standards that have been compiled using WCAG, NHS service manual and GDS guidance.
