Evidence-based interventions

Evidence-based interventions dashboard has been updated with List 2 interventions

The evidence-based interventions programme has been developed to help make sure patients are not offered unnecessary treatment on the NHS.

Unnecessary treatments can cause harm to patients, and the programme aims to prevent this.

The programme will initially focus on 17 interventions:

  • 4 that should not be routinely offered to patients unless there are exceptional circumstances.
  • 13 that should only be offered to patients when certain clinical criteria are met.

This dashboard provides information about:

  • baseline activity figures
  • estimated activity reduction goals

The Evidence-based interventions dashboard has been updated with List 2 interventions (Word: 246KB).

Following an engagement process in Summer 2020, the programme has targeted 31 additional interventions. Two interventions, Exercise ECG (2L) and Helmet therapy (2Z), should not be routinely offered to patients unless there are exceptional circumstances (Category 1). The remaining 29 interventions should only be offered to patients when certain clinical criteria are met (Category 2). To see all 31 interventions, please see the clinical guidance document on the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges website.

The information is available to Sub Integrated Care Board Locations (SICBLs) (previously CCGs) and Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) (previously STPs) via ePACT2 and also a public version is available via Catalyst - public insight portal.

The public version of the dashboard has an activity of 5 or below redacted, this is in accordance with the following policy:Department of Health and NHS England statistical policy: disclosure and confidentiality
